Everest Trekking - on the way to the roof of the world
Lukla, the most dangerous airport in the world
The 2860 m high Tensing-Hillary-Airport is the bottleneck to Everest region. Often flights are canceled due to fog or bad weather conditions.
The runway is located on a highplateau and only 20 m wide and 550 m long. The airport Lukla is a so called STOL-Airport: Short Take Off and Landing. After a failed approach for a landing the pilot has no more chance to touch-and-go once again. A rock face forms an obstacle at the end of the runway. The runway declines - reason: landings in Lukla occur "uphill" and starts for acceleration "downhill".
Syangboche
The big but not tarred runway and a recently crashed down airplane of Yeti (Tara) Air remember that here should be build a second Lukla in 3800 m elevation. The dangerous landing and mass occurring altitude sickness of passengers have stopped the ambitious project. Nowadays sometimes graze Yaks on the unused runway.
Tip: Who wants to treat his knees with care and not walk down the whole distance across Namche Bazar to Lukla, may be picked up by an airplaine in Syangboche or much better by a helicopter in Pangboche.
For the flight to Lukla Yeti Air uses werden prop airliner of typ Twin Otter and Dornier 228, to Syangboche Pilatus Porter or helicopter. |
