Hiking onto Mihintale mountain
Drive to the bizarre rock formations of Mihintale. The climb (800 steps) in the pouring rain barefoot onto the slippery Sila rock is a challenge. Oposite located to the Sila Rocks the huge snow-white Maha Seya Dagoba from the 1st Century. Under the pagoda, a hair of the Buddha's nose should be buried. The pilgrimage Mihintale is considered the "cradle of Buddhism" in Sri Lanka. It has rained so much that even the chickens and dogs have crept into the ticket kiosk for a dry shelter. Not far from the ticket kiosk we reach the once covered platform with the conversion platform Ambastala Vatadage.
The GPS track shows the little tour starting at Anuradhapura. Thousands of Sinhalese pilgrims come to Poson Full Moon Festival in June to Mihintale mountain. According to legend, King Devanampiya Tissa (250 - 210 BC) appears a white deer during the hunt. As the deer disappeared, instead appeared the monk Mahinda, son of the Indian emperor Ashoka in front of him and converted him to Buddhism.
