Cologne Dome, Gothic Monumental Cathedral, UNESCO World Heritage Site
Tip: Ascent of the tower - The southtower of the Cologne Dome we climb upon a narrow spiral staircase consisting of 533 stairs. From the on circa 97 m elevation located viewing balcony we have a breathtaking panoramic sight down to the old town of Cologne, the Heumarket and the river Rhein.
The Dome of the german city Cologne, built over a log periode from 1248 to 1880, is known as masterpiece of Gothic Architecture and belongs to the world cultural heritage. During the extrem long construction time the Original construction planes are not changed. The lightweight construction of the Gothic Monumental Cathedral is an absolute sensation, it looks like as the genial Dombaumeister have overcome the gravitational force. The basement of the Cologne Dome consists of a combination of hard Sandstone and smooth Tuff, put together with a kind of cement, which should be earthquake secure. The black colour of the Cologne Dome is caused by stone erosion, due to the air pollution. |
