Sigiriya, the Lion Rock
The 200 m high monolith of volcanic origin, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around 500 AD. King Kassapa builds on the summit of the block of the magma eroded volcano an impregnable fortress with the palace buildings. Today only the foundation walls of the palace are preserved. From the huge lion's head, through whose snout earlier, the steepest part of the ascent to the top began, only the huge paws of the Lion Gate are just left today. Halfway up you can find the world famous frescoes of the more than 1500 years old sexy cloud girls. The mostly bare-breasted cloud girls can be reached through a barred spiral staircase. We mastered the steep iron ladders in the pouring rain. At the foot of Sigiriya rock is a very nice hotel, the Sigiriya Village.
